Portuguese Army Will Boost Healthcare with Cannabis

In an unprecedented move, the National Medicines Laboratory (LNM) of Portugal, an entity integrated within the Portuguese Army and overseen by the Ministry of Defense, is set to begin the production of cannabis-based medicines, substances, and preparations.

This initiative, aimed at addressing the needs of Portuguese patients, marks a significant shift in the approach towards cannabis and its medicinal applications.

The LNM, evolving from its former identity as the Military Chemical and Pharmaceutical Products Laboratory, has been a cornerstone in Portugal’s pharmaceutical landscape since 1918.

The recent contract for constructing clean rooms for handling medicinal cannabis, signed in August 2023, is a testament to this progressive shift.

The contract, valued at approximately 183,000 euros, was awarded to TypeSolution S.A., a company specializing in laboratory and industrial equipment, including clean room design and supply.

This development is particularly interesting given TypeSolution’s clientele, which includes several players in the medical cannabis sector like Tilray, CannPrisma, and LabialFarma.

The move by LNM to engage in cannabis handling could potentially alleviate the financial burden on the Portuguese State, especially concerning the high costs of cannabis-based medicines like Epidyolex or Sativex.

Pioneering Research in Functional Cannabinoid Products

Since 2020, LNM has been an active participant in the SkanAbility research consortium. This project focuses on developing functional cosmetic formulations and aromatherapy products incorporating cannabinoids and terpenes.

These compounds, extracted and purified from dried cannabis flowers or leaves, are being explored for their potential in creams, emulsions, tonics, and enriched oils.

The consortium, which includes notable entities like EXM Ceuticals Portugal, COSMETEK, Vinideas, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon, and the University of Minho, reflects a collaborative effort to harness the benefits of cannabis in various applications.

LNM’s role in SkanAbility was crucial, involving the planning and design of a biological and data biobank for comprehensive characterization and storage of cannabis samples.

The planning and design phase has been completed, and the implementation of the physical infrastructure is now underway.

The Future of Cannabis in Portugal – Implications and Expectations

The involvement of the Portuguese Army, through LNM, in the production and handling of medicinal cannabis is a groundbreaking development. It signifies a major shift in the perception and utilization of cannabis, particularly in a medicinal context.

This initiative could lead to more accessible and affordable cannabis-based treatments for Portuguese patients, potentially revolutionizing the healthcare landscape in Portugal.

The implications of this development are far-reaching. It could pave the way for more research and development in the field of medicinal cannabis, leading to new treatments and therapies.

The collaboration between military and civilian entities in this endeavor also highlights the potential for cross-sector partnerships in advancing medical science and healthcare.

A New Era in Medicinal Cannabis. Portugal’s Pioneering Approach

Portugal’s approach to medicinal cannabis, exemplified by the involvement of the National Medicines Laboratory and the Portuguese Army, sets a precedent for other countries.

It demonstrates a progressive and pragmatic approach to harnessing the therapeutic potential of cannabis. This initiative could serve as a model for other nations looking to explore the medicinal applications of cannabis in a controlled, scientific, and beneficial manner.

These steps could lead to significant advancements in the field of medicinal cannabis, offering new hope and options for patients not only in Portugal but potentially around the world.
