Few cannabis strains develop purple buds when cultivated indoors under regular, warm temperatures. This makes strains like Purple Punch a rare and captivating sight indoors.
While many growers are hesitant to reduce nighttime temperatures below the optimum to stimulate the production of the purple pigment anthocyanin, some strains have a unique genetic composition that allows for significant anthocyanin production even at standard indoor temperatures.
The Legacy of Purple Punch
One such strain is Purple Punch from Barney’s Farm. Its purple hue is inherited from its esteemed parent, Granddaddy Purple, a renowned Californian hybrid of Purple Urkle and Big Bud introduced in 2003.
The other parent, Larry OG, is equally potent and famous, hailing from California. Thus, Purple Punch is a testament to top-tier West Coast genetics.
Impressive Growth and Yield
The strain’s data is impressive. This 90% indica variety takes just 50-60 days to flower, producing generous indoor yields of up to 600-700 g/m2. The plants are bushy, multi-branched, and medium in height, reaching up to 90 cm indoors.
They are also suitable for outdoor cultivation, maturing by the second or third week of September and demonstrating strong mold resistance. In optimal conditions, outdoor yields can reach a staggering 2 kg per plant without exceeding 1.5 meters in height.
A Tantalizing Treat for the Senses
Its effects align with its 90/10 indica dominance, ranging from relaxation and stress relief to potent sedation. As for its aroma, Barney’s describes Purple Punch as reminiscent of “baked apple pie with cloves, glazed with caramelized blueberry and cherries.” A tantalizing treat for the senses!
The two seeds germinated swiftly and exhibited strong indica traits, such as broad leaves and short internodes.
Given their 90/10 indica dominance, they were allowed an extended five-week vegetative phase. As they transitioned to flowering, their buds densely packed and began to display purple hues. Remarkably, even at this early stage, the buds were heavily coated in resin.
Harvest and Experience
By the end of the eighth week, the plants were ready for harvest. They had transformed into resin powerhouses, with even the upper fan leaves sparkling with crystals. The dried buds retained their vibrant purple color, making them visually striking with their thick resin layer.
The Doc’s experience with Purple Punch was profound. After vaping it, he was enveloped by a powerful indica high. He described it as deeply relaxing, melting away bodily tension and bringing about a serene mental state.
